Woohoo! Bonus session! Wasn't expecting that one.
Thought it might be marginally windy today, maybe a 5.9 session, but on
getting up no sign so was resigning myself to a day of washing and Asda.
But 11am and the wind is picking up....by midday constant 20 mph. My body
was pleading with me for a day of rest after yesterday, but nah, SW 20 mph
just can't be ignored. Especially since it looks like the last wind we'll
get for a while.
So back to the Ham. Only one bloke out when I arrived 12.30pm, on a biggish
sail. Very marginal at the start on the 5.9, but after about 45 mins the
wind really started to kick in. Couldn't believe it, all good! Tried
whacking on max downhaul on the 5.9, but nope still way overpowered so
straight back in again and out comes the 5.2.
The first half an hour on the 5.2 was definitely the best bit of the
session. Fully powered up, just plonk the feet into the straps and go,
planing out of gybes, eeeexcceellent. I would wager that no one else out
there was on more suitable kit for the conditions than me. Flat/choppy well
powered 5.2 weather is what the Bee is designed for, and it was absolutely
loving it.
Wind dropped off a tad later on, but still had a solid couple of hours with
the 5.2, planing comfortably for most of it, sailing reasonably well,
pulled off a couple of duck gybes. That session was in many ways more
satisfying than yesterday's, mainly because it was so unexpected I suppose
but also because the Bee/5.2 combo is such a good one. Would have been an
elusive 5 stars if the wind had carried on, but overall just 4 again.
Incredible, finally, a fully windy absolutely stonking weekend. Just what I
needed. :)
